Finding Sacred Ground
The Power of Rituals in Uncertain Times

In a world that moves faster than our hearts can keep up, it’s no wonder we often feel untethered. We scroll, we strive, we spin in circles of productivity, and still, there’s a sense of something missing. Especially during uncertain times, when change knocks at the door, or life feels upended and our nervous systems crave anchors of meaning.
Enter rituals.
Those small but mighty practices that turn the ordinary into the sacred. Rituals aren’t just for religious ceremonies or faraway traditions… they’re an ancient human need, scientifically proven to soothe our minds and ground our spirits.
What Makes a Ritual a Ritual?
Psychologists define rituals as actions infused with symbolic meaning (more than just a habit or routine). They are intentional acts that transform “just another day” into a container of presence.
A cup of tea can be a ritual. Lighting a candle can be a ritual. Even taking three deep breaths before a meeting can be a ritual, if we bring intention to it.
Dr. Michael Norton of Harvard Business School, who studies the psychology of rituals, found that even simple, personal rituals can reduce grief, stress, and anxiety.¹
In his study, people who performed rituals after losing a loved one reported feeling more in control, less overwhelmed, and more at peace with their loss. Rituals, he concluded, provide structure in the midst of chaos— a sense of agency when life feels unpredictable.
The Neuroscience of Rituals and Nervous System Regulation
Neuroscience supports what ancient wisdom has long known: rituals regulate the nervous system.
When we perform a familiar ritual like lighting a candle, setting an intention, or reciting a mantra, we engage the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, which helps the body shift from fight-or-flight into rest-and-digest mode.²
This is especially important for high-achieving, overthinking women who often feel stuck in survival mode, spinning through to-do lists without a pause to breathe (because, how dare you do that, right?!). Rituals invite you to step out of constant doing and into gentle being.
Rituals also activate the insula, a part of the brain linked to self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation.³ This means that rituals don’t just calm us; they connect us to our deeper sense of self and others, which is a powerful antidote to modern-day disconnection.
Rituals as Bridges to the Sacred
Beyond science, rituals invite us back to what is sacred. In times of uncertainty, they remind us that meaning isn’t always found in the answers; sometimes, it’s found in the pause, the presence, the intention to mark the moment.
This is especially vital for those navigating transitions (e.g. job changes, heartbreaks, big moves, identity shifts), who might feel lost in the liminal space.
Rituals remind us that uncertainty is not a void, but a portal.
How to Create Meaningful Rituals Every Day
- Start Small: Choose a simple action such as a morning stretch, lighting incense before starting your work day, free writing in your journal for three minutes per day, or taking a breath before a meal. The key is to do it with intention!
- Name the Meaning: Ask yourself, Why does this matter to me? It could be grounding, gratitude, or simply a moment to remember you’re alive.
- Be Consistent: Repetition builds trust. Like a lighthouse in the fog, a daily ritual can guide you back to yourself.
- Engage Your Senses: Rituals are embodied experiences. Feel the warmth of the candle, smell the herbs, listen to your breath. Sensuality is spirituality.
Why Rituals Matter More Than Ever
In a hyper-connected, hyper-distracted world, rituals offer a moment of sacred pause.
In our productive-obsessed world, where pausing often evokes guilt, instead it becomes a safe haven… a chance to breathe, to reconnect, and to remember who you are underneath the noise.
They remind you that you are not just a mind with a to-do list. You are a soul in a body, a living, breathing miracle deserving of your own reverence.
So go ahead, give yourself the damn permission to pause. Light that candle. Sip that tea. Take that breath. The sacred is not somewhere out there; it’s waiting for you in the smallest of moments.
